Selection Process

We don’t just place puppies, but rather, match puppy to owner.

In order to find the right puppy for you, we need to know about your family, lifestyle, living arrangements and any preferences you might have about the puppy’s gender, colour and coat type.

Multiple factors must be evaluated in order to get the right puppies into the right homes. The most important factor is temperament. From your discussions with us we can determine if a particular puppy’s temperament will best match your needs. After temperament, we will try as best we can to match your preferences in coat, gender, and colour. Regarding gender preference; unlike some breeds where gender specific personality issues are often seen, there is very little difference between PWD male and female personalities.

As much as possible, it is helpful if you keep an open mind during the selection process and remember that temperament is the most important consideration. You cannot live with a dog, no matter how beautiful its coat or markings, if it does not have the right personality for you and your lifestyle. And, depending on your position on the waiting list, the one you have your heart set on might not be available when it’s your time to choose.

We observe all our puppies throughout their development to assess their personalities. During our observation we are looking for factors such as independence, dominance, energy level, willingness to work with people and sound sensitivity. Identifying these traits is very important. The dominant puppy might be too strong willed for a home with young children. The sound sensitive puppy would not be as happy in an urban setting. The independent puppy, which can amuse itself, will probably be happy in a household where everyone is gone all day. These are the types of conditions and temperaments that must be factored into matching the puppy to the adoptive family.

At the 7-8 week point we do our final assessments and puppy matching. As part of the selection process we will take into consideration your desire for gender, colour and coat, however, personality matching will remain the most important factor.

While this process may delay some of the fun and gratification of planning for your new family member, it insures that you get the right puppy for your home and lifestyle.

As a responsible breeder, we want you and your puppy to be happy for a lifetime.
